!!~ Handy-Dandy Tip Alert ~!!

This tip comes from the railroad gardeners:
(*not tested by TGT yet)

To slow down the growth of your miniature or dwarf tree or shrub even more: cut the bottom out of the nursery pot that the plant came in. Put the plant back in the pot and plant it, pot and all, in the ground where you want it.

It will constrain the side shoots of the roots, while the tap roots from the bottom-side will be able to get the water and nutrients it needs.

The plant will think it is still in the pot and thus limit its top growth, (kind of how Bonsai works) but it can't get root-bound because the roots can grow into the soil from the bottom.

We'll have to try in here in our gardens! The only question remaining is how long can the plant be kept like that? How long until it tires of being constrained? ... Inquiring minds will need to know.....

... A Note from the Head M.G....

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear!

I'm not doing a very good job in keeping these newsletters consistent am I? Various roadblocks which turn into seemingly viable excuses are now surfacing as I write this... I apologize, yet again.

I see my main job as serving you the best way I know how - to be here to answer your questions and to make sure you have everything you need to create your own worlds. I have the best customers in the world and you deserve the best service that I can possibly give you. Which brings us to the upside of the busy-ness: we are gaining subscriber's from all over the place and our web-store is just humming with activity! This gives us a  chance to try new products AND to have new ideas constantly flowing through the store.

So, solutions, solutions!! I would like to try smaller newsletters and perhaps more frequent (Don't laugh - it's worth a shot, eh?). Instead of letting things accumulate for the quarterly newsletter, maybe a short and sweet monthly newsletter would be easier and more fun to do. This way I won't get bogged down with ideas and end up with a daunting pile of work to sift through before I even sit down to write. I can get out the ideas faster and you can have more fun that way!

So, onward and upward, tally-ho! Let's get on with it!

Happy Summer,

Janit

Sorticulture is Everett’s Garden Arts Festival -- part art, part horticulture -- where art and nature are partnered perfectly in a three-day festival that celebrates the possibilities of outdoor living. Sorticulture will showcase artists presenting a variety of handcrafted, locally-made garden embellishments, and specialty nurseries presenting a wide array of rare and unusual plants.

Sorticulture will feature some of the Northwest’s noted garden personalities, demonstrations by local chefs using fresh and local ingredients, kids’ activities, live acoustic music, and hundreds of ideas to create your own beautiful outdoor environment.

A Miniature Garden Moment

This is one Miniature Garden in front of our house that has been there for three years now, I keep trimming the ground covers back from the path and adding to it every so often.  Note the pond amongst the miniature daisies. (Bellium minutum) There was a patch of dead foliage where a dog relieved himself and killed part of it. I put a pond on the 'spot' as a quick fix. (I'll divide the daisies next winter.)
Miniature Garden with Pond
I caught this little guy one morning.... you can't lead a slug to water....
Slug drinking from miniature pond
...but you can watch him drink!
He hung out for a few minutes before moving on.... probably in the direction of my hostas! The slugs are just loving the cool damp summer we are having here in Seattle this year - but I have never come across one actually drinking before.  Maybe I should fill the pond with beer! (A common slug trap out here: a little for me... a little for the slugs.... it's all good!)

The Constant Miniature Gardener

Just in case you haven't noticed, a miniature garden is really easy to maintain. I was about to assemble your list of "Summer garden to-dos" and it's just like winter's list! Skim through this checklist to see if there is anything you haven't thought about this season:

1. Clean out the dead leaves or needles from your conifers when you see them.
This is how conifers naturally shed their leaves but it does accumulate in the middle of the shrub. The dead foliage blocks air and light from getting in - which eventually leads to the death of the conifer. Get a pair of gloves on and pretend your shampooing the shrub gently (there you are, laughing again - but it works!), then clean up from underneath the plant with your fork (acts like a mini rake!)

2. Pull those weeds when you see them - get the roots and be done with it. Try not to leave it too long and let them go to seed - less work for you later on.

3. All outdoor pots should have at least one drainage hole, the roots will
rot if left sitting in water - water plants excluded, of course.

4. Check your pots under your eaves and on your covered porches
and decks to make sure they are getting the water they need.

5. Miniature Gardens can go anywhere, tuck a bench and a birdbath next to the pathway, along side some ornamental grass or beside a rock to get more magic happening in your garden. - Go to our online store now.

**Contributions are welcome! I know a lot about the Northwest - do you have tip for your area? Submit your tip, if we use it you will receive a $10 gift certificate toward your next purchase and you'll get credit for it in the next newsletter too!**
